| Information: | The tabulating machine was an electro-mechanical machine initially designed to assist in summarizing information stored on punched cards. Invented by Herman Hollerith, the first machine was developed to help process data for the 1890 U.S. Census. It spawned a class of machines, known as unit record equipment, and the data processing industry.
Later models such as the 416 were widely used for business applications such as accounting, invoicing and inventory control. They could be programmed using control panels and produce printed output on continuous feed paper. |
